Team News – Week 8, 16th June 2018

Its week 8 of the Intersport Monkhouse Derbyshire & Cheshire

Last Saturday saw the first XI play Away against New Mills.

It was an early start for the first team as they travelled to New Mills Via Hayfield to avoid the Annual New Mills Carnival, arriving a good hour before the scheduled start time we took advantage of some of Greg’s fielding drills.

The Drill was called Cut and Pull and can only be described as a Laurel and Hardy type effort. However, after last week’s shambles in the field it needed to be done….

Newton won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a decent deck albeit a little grassy, (5 tosses out of 5 won I believe)

New Mills wasted no time in ripping through our top order and at 32 for 4 it looked like it could be an expensive day back watching the second team. Then came Matty Stringer in at his preferred Number 5 spot and he rattled off 39 from 47 balls and was well supported by Lee Turner and George, although they didn’t trouble the scorers much with scores and 12 and 6 they hung around to steady the ship.

At 75 for 6 Alex Stones entered the crease and it wasn’t long before he was down on one knee Caribbeanesq sweeping the ball for a maximum. This formed a partnership of 60 runs with the newly demoted to number 9 batsman Andy Turner, who chipped in with his own 28 off 35 balls,

Sadly this partnership came to an end when Alex forgot he was batting with Andy and mistook him for Usain Bolt and proceeded to run him out….

Alex finished undefeated on 40 off 56 balls

Newtons Innings came to a close on 169 all out.

At half time we thought we were probably 30 short but from 34 for 4 we had to be relatively happy with the outcome.

Newton started their defence with the return of the Leg End that is Mike Hyde behind the stumps.

Josh and Matty kept the New Mills openers reasonably quite but we struggled for a break through.

Matty eventually Bowled Cooper for 15 with the score on 61.

A Bowling change saw Andy Turner send the off stump of the other opener C. Firth “cartwheeling” and the score was 82/2.  Firth Scoring 51 from 75

Newton then struggled to take wickets until the Introduction of Skipper Lee Turner that saw him serve up a juicy half tracker that should have landed back at the New Mills Carnival but instead was placed to the coiled spring that was Greg Johnson at mid wicket.

The score was 113/3, Duckworth managed to steer his side home with no more wickets falling and finishing the game with the Tetley Challenge.

Newtons bowling was fairly economical with none of the bowlers going for more than 4 per over….

Overall a slightly better performance in defeat than the previous 2 weeks, however the points didn’t show that with us only picking up 4.

Only one catch dropped which was a difficult one sent at him like a rocket but fortunately it didn’t cost us many runs………….

no names mentioned but he run someone out in the first half.

The Second Team Also entertained New Mills and were looking to get back to winning ways after last week’s defeat to Broadbottom.

Winning the Toss and Electing to Bat saw us make 186 for 8 mainly thanks to a Brilliant 108 off 117 balls including 18 x 4’s and 2 x 6’s, nobody else really troubled the scorers with Byes being the next top scorer with 15.

New Mills reply got off to a great start and were cruising at 90 without loss after 20 overs, Then up stepped 13 year old Charlie Barnard with a superb display and turned the game on its head taking 6 for 28 off 11.3

New Mills stuttered from 90/1 to 155 all out inside 38 overs.

Mark and Martin Pottage both picking up the other 4 wickets with 2 apiece.

A Brilliant display from Father and Son, Mark and Charlie.
